Is John Chayka the right fit for an organization in desperate need of team and fan culture rebranding?
Who is John Chayka?
John Chayka isn’t looking to be some placid General Manager within the Leafs organization. Merely weeks into holding this new position, Chayka is already making waves and reorganizing the team’s management. But who is he?
Professional History
John Chayka, born and raised in Ontario, Canada is the youngest General Manager in NHL history. At just 26, Chayka was hired by the Arizona Coyotes. During his time with the organization, the Coyotes made the first playoff appearance in 8 years.
However, his history with the Coyotes organization was marred by his abrupt, and rather unsportsmanlike exit just before the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs were set to begin.
Just one day prior to the beginning of the playoffs, Chayka made the unexpected and abrupt decision to leave the organization. A move NHL Commissioner, Gary Bettman, determined to be “detrimental to the league and game.” To make matters worse, Chayka was found to be engaging in prohibited activity that eventually led to the organization’s forfeiting of their second round pick in the 2020 draft, and first round pick in the 2021 draft.
The BIG Question
With Chayka’s erratic, unexpected, and unsportsmanlike history, how can the leafs – an organization in desperate need of both team and fan culture rebranding – expect to truly see any constructive changes. Of course, only time will tell.
However, it should be noted that Chayka has already begun making internal changes, with the Leafs announcing the departure of Head Coach, Craig Berube, Assistant General Manager Brandon Pridham and Assistant General Manager, Player Personnel Derek Clancey – signaling that Chayka is ready to do whatever he feels he needs to do to change this team for the better.
